The Black Keys. What a band.

Art, Love, Photography

I started listening to The Black Keys just last year and I have to say…I am addicted! They are an amazing rock duo from Akron, Ohio and formed in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar and vocals) and Patrick Carney (Drums).  They began as an independent act after the duo dropped out of college and they eventually emerged amoung a range of popular rock revival artists in the 2000s. In 2011, they had sold over 2 million albums in the United States! They have a lot albums released since 2002 and their Debut album was “The Big Come Up”…which was recorded in Carney’s basement! The groups commercial break though came in 2010 with their album “Brothers”…which is an AMAZING album! so get on Spotify or YouTube and give it a listen if you haven’t already! Their most recent album is “El Camino”…which is also an amazing album! from this album, they are going to undertake their very first arena concert tour. The first of their career!

So, you may be wondering why I am talking about The Black Keys…well, I was recently looking at their website and came across a lot of their posters from various different gigs they have done throughout America and they are amazing!

and there are LOADS more! amazing artwork AND an amazing band!

In the studio…

Material Matters, Sketchbook Work, Textiles

In the studio this week, I have been looking at the art of Mixed media. I have been currently working on some simple fabric manipulations and experimented with dying up fabric. I took my colour choices from one of my paintings in my sketchbook as I love the bright and bold Kingfisher blue. The colours in that painting compliment each other very nicely and I am extremely pleased with its overall turn out.

This was the rock/crystal that inspired me for this painting. I love the colours that are laced through it and I think that this will help my project obtain an eye-catching colour palette and look!

When I first started this painting, I was intending to focus on the colours and shapes only as I had a lot of previous drawings that focused on the intricate details. I loved its turn out as I think that the bright blue is very eye-catching and helps make the painting much more interesting to look at. As well as the bright blue, I also really like the surrounding colours because I think they are quite different to what I have been focusing on. These colours relate the my views on rock formations because they aren’t as bright but still look quite beautiful.

From this painting, I took this colour scheme and decided to dye some of my fabric for my fabric manipulations. Aswell as using the dyes, I wanted to concentrate on the different shapes and textures of some of the drawings in my sketchbooks. I have really enjoyed making my fabric manipulations as it has given me the chance to really experiment with different sewing techniques and I think it has helped give me a clearer view of what I could really do in my project!

These are my fabric manipulations so far! I know that with more practice, I will be able to further develop my skills but for my first week in mixed media, I think they turned out alright! I have quite a bad habit of being very over critical of myself but I thought that I would put these samples up just to show what the studio has been like this week. I have really enjoyed mixed media so far and can’t wait to try some new dye techniques!

Until next time!

Comfy Cosy Fall

Fashion, Textiles

It’s that time of year again! Time for the scarf, gloves, hats and those cosy knitwear to make an appearance as the chilly winter weather approaches. Although, I think this weather is practically here! very chilly today…Brrrh.

I love getting my winter clothes! from digging out the wonders from the year before to buying some new cosy clothes. I have to say, my current colour for my wardrobe at the moment is quite dark so, for this winter, I hope to rectify this and get some more colour into my wardrobe. I recently bought a wine/purple maxi skirt and I have to say, I wasn’t sure at first but it is definitely growing on me! I really like that colour at the moment and from now on, I am going to learn how to organise my wardrobe and make sure every purchase will fit in nicely with my colour palette. Therefore, everything should match and it will stop me from impulse buying!

These are the colours that I really love at the moment and hope to include in my winter wardrobe!

These are the colours that I really love at the moment and I hope to include them in my comfy cosy winter wardrobe.

Here are some Fall colour palettes!

Some Fall Colours

More earth tones.

I was recently browsing on and I came across their latest Fall 2011 trend report. Perfect! something to give me all the information about the ‘in’ styles of this season! They have selected seven trends and they are: Collage Studies, Colour Forms, Parka City, Psychedelic Furs, Sixties Minutes, Spotty Service and Tux Love.

So here is a quite view of each trend!

Collage Studies – This link shows this trend! I couldn’t get the photos because they wouldn’t allow me to save so click the link for the slideshow! This trend is all about mixing patterns, different textures, colours and many different fabrics.

Colour Forms – This link showing this seasons colour forms. This trend is all about continuing the bright bold colours of the summer. Designers are mixing electric bold colour blocks so as to create a bold eye-catching graphic look. For example, a geometric black and white printed dress with a bright coloured legging or pair of tights.

Parka City – This link shows this current trend for this fall. This trend is all about practicality and being able to withstand this blistering cold weather. However, it has to be fashionable right? So, for this trend designers are making the parka suitable for an evening dress code as well as the more practical side. No matter what though, you will be nice and warm in this current trend!

Psychedelic Furs – This link shows the current trend for this seasons furs. This season, designers seem to be taking furs and brightening them up! from a tan colour to a candy pink! Enhancing this seasons colours.

Sixties Minutes – This links shows this trend for this fall. This trend shows the appearance of the Swinging Sixties. From the white stockings to the T-Strap pumps. As well as the hair-dos on this current catwalk!

Spotty Service – This link shows this current trend for Fall 2011. This trend is all about the polka dots. From all over patterns to girly sequined styles onto garments. They will always appear again and again!

Tux Love – This link shows the current trend for this Fall. This trend is all about the Tux and showing that woman can look just as good in a Tux as men can. A very sophisticated look. Check out the Yves Saint Laurent collection for more! “Stefano Pilate? His came in white with nothing underneath”.
